Mountain Dental Provided Free Oral Cancer Screenings

April 2011 – Mountain Dental provided free visual head and neck oral cancer exams during the week of April 11 – 15 in recognition of the National Oral Cancer Awareness week. Patients who were screened and needed further evaluation were referred to a specialist. Mountain Dental is committed to the fight against oral cancer and patients routinely receive a visual head, neck, and oral cancer screening during regular visits. Enhanced screenings are also available to identify suspicious lesions earlier and a portion of the proceeds from the enhanced screenings will be donated to the Oral Cancer Foundation.

One American dies every hour from oral cancer. Early detection is the key to survival. When discovered early, oral cancer patients have an 80 to 90% survival rate. The foundation for this program was to highlight the importance of routine oral cancer screenings with emphasis on early detection and to create public awareness about oral cancer risk factors. The success of the program was evidenced through participation by individuals who ranged in age and concerns linked to use of both smokeless tobacco, cigarette use and other risk factors.
